Summer Youth Employment Program Ends; 21 Lihue Teens Benefit From Program

Lihue – This isn’t mowing lawns, setting up lemonade stands, or babysitting.

21 teenagers worked with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii – Lihue Outreach this summer, learning vital job skills ranging from dressing for and handling job interviews to marketing and promoting club programs.

”If they’re not going to summer school, it’s better that kids are working with us to earn a paycheck that they can save towards college, prom, or helping their families,” said Michael Miranda, Program Director of Lihue Outreach.

SYEP participants also benefitted from Boys & Girls Club Job Ready! career preparation program. Staff taught these youth to properly dress for the workplace and tested them with intense mock interviews.

Money for the Summer Youth Employment Program came from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Stimulus Funds, through the State of Hawaii’s Department of Labor and Industrial Relations for June through August, and through the Department of Defense for the month of September.
