‘Slippah Project’ provides footwear to youngsters

Members of the Leaders In Training of the Lihue Outreach distributed slippers and books to kids at Lihue Court Townhomes on Friday, December 19. The slippers were donated by individuals and corporate sponsors (Royal Hawaiian Movers and Oahu Express, Ltd.) of The Slippah Project.

The Slippah Project

The Slippah Project, started in 2005 by community volunteer Lynn Vasquez of Mayor Wright Housing on Oahu, aims for children as she says, “to have a pair of rubber slippers so they won’t have to go barefoot.”

Three years later, an offshoot of the project will be started on Kauai. Boys & Girls Club Leaders In Training from the Lihue Outreach and Waimea Clubhouse will be spearheading fundraising and distribution to provide slippers to Kauai’s youth who are homeless or living in housing projects.

The Slippah Project on Kauai is hoping to raise donations–monetary or actual slippers– to provide 1,500 slippers for Kauai’s needy youth. To contribute for Kauai’s youth, please send or drop off donations to:

Happy Halloween!

Lihue Court Townhomes and the Boys & Girls Club held a Halloween Costume Parade and Contest on October 31. Kids, parents, and neighbors walked around the LCT property to trick or treat and show off various costumes including fairies, princesses, and ninjas.

New Digs!

The Kauai Branch & Lihue Outreach Office recently moved in to a new location–across the hall! The YWCA of Kauai will be sharing the new location, which totals nearly 1,600 square feet, to establish the Kauai Youth Network.

Boys & Girls Club arrives in Koloa!

The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii – Lihue Outreach opened a new after school program on the Koloa Elementary School campus on September 16, 2008. This program is open to all youth ages 7-17 in the Koloa-Lawai area.

Activities are held in room P-2 and at the playground areas on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2 PM to 6 PM. Programs include Power Hour (homework help), SPARK (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids), and SMART (Skills Mastery And Resistance Training) Moves, and Art.

Memberships are accepted year-round. Registration costs $1 and requires a proof of age (i.e. birth certificate, state ID, baptismal record). Call the Lihue Outreach at 632-0009 for more information.

Register your child for the Boys & Girls Club After School Program in Koloa!

The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii – Lihue Outreach will be starting an after school program at Koloa Elementary School on September 16! We will be holding a registration night on Friday, September 12, from 6 PM to 8 PM in the school cafeteria.

The after school program runs from 2 PM to 6 PM on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at Koloa Elementary School in room P-2. There is a $1 annual fee. Youth ages 7-17 are encouraged to enroll. Click on the flyer for more information on registering your child.

Kauai Clubhouses raise money at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair

The Lihue Outreach and Kapaa and Waimea Clubhouses sorted recyclables and maintained trash receptacles for all four days of the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair in August. We earned up to $4500 plus the refunds of recycling the HI5 containers collected at the fair.

Safeway, Inc. contributed $2,000 to support the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii – Kauai Unit’s after school program at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School. Safeway and Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii hope to continue collaboration for future opportunities in the near future, as Safeway is planning a project across the street from CKMS.

Lihue Outreach Seeking Volunteers

The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii – Lihue Outreach is seeking parent or adult volunteers for after school programs and activities!

We will be needing additional volunteers for the upcoming Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair, where Boys & Girls Club staff, youth, and parents will be handling recycling duties as a fundraiser for the organization. The fair runs from Thursday, August 28, to Sunday, August 31. Shifts are from 4 PM to 12 midnight (Thursday and Friday), and 12 noon to 12 midnight (Saturday and Sunday).

Lihue ends Summer 2008 with a visit from Willie K

Grammy-nominated and Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning artist Willie K visited youth at the Boys & Girls Club in Lihu‘e at the Lihu‘e Court Townhomes. The musician was on Kauai for the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort’s 10th Annual Sunset Ho‘olaule‘a.
